Winter Cup Last 20 Draw & Handicaps

Winter League

A very interesting draw for the Last 20 in the Winter Cup which means that only one Division 1 bowler (at best) can reach the final of this year's competition. More of that later but first here is the full draw presented as a straight record of all the ties.

By presenting all the remaining rounds in the competition in tree format, as below, you get a very different perspective of the consequences of the draw.

For instance, no Division 1 bowler was drawn to play in the Preliminary Round. All the Division 1 qualifiers are in the top half of the draw fighting, with 4 others, for one place in the final. Even though all the Division 1 bowlers have avoided each other until the quarter-finals it still cannot be an all-Division 1 final.

The other finalist will come from the bottom half of the draw which includes all four of the Division 2 qualifiers. Just one clash between bowlers from the same team and that is when the Milnsbridge C teammates of Graham Sykes and Graham Parr go head-to-head in the Preliminary Round. Just for clarification, it was a totally open draw with no seeding in place.

Handicaps come into play at this stage of the competition and they are colour-coded into the tree presentation below. The key to the handicaps is shown in the box bottom right of the tree drawing below but is fairly straightforward. All Division 1 bowlers are on Scratch; plus 2 for Division 2 bowlers; plus 3 for Division 3 bowlers; plus 4 for Division 4 and plus 5 for Division 5 bowlers.

The Preliminary and the Round of the Last 16 both take place at Springwood on Wednesday 12 April starting at 1.00pm. Upon completion, we will have the eight bowlers who will go through to Finals Day to be played on the following Sunday. More details of that nearer the date but for now soak up the tension of a draw that presents plenty of opportunities for a few shock results.
