Two Division 3 teams relegated last Monday

Review of the Division 3 & 4 fixtures played on Monday

We have the first teams to be relegated this season when two Division 3 teams lost their Monday matches to drop through the relegation trapdoor. Springwood 'B' and Almondbury BC 'A' both lost their Division 3 fixtures 0-8 to seal their fates and will play in Division 4 next season.

The Springwood team lost to Brockholes 'A' who now need just one point from their two remaining fixtures to confirm their promotion. Almondbury's fate was sealed when they lost 0-8 to their nearest rivals, Rastrick 'B' who will now face another Division 3 season when they will probably be joined by the club's 'A' team as well coming down from Division 2.

Huddersfield Recreation Club 'A' beat Thorpe Green 'B' 6-2 which leaves them needing just 6 points from their two remaining matches to clinch promotion. Those two matches are against Rastrick 'B' and Dalton so they will want to avoid a final day tussle with their nearest challengers which can be avoided if they get the 6 points when they play Rastrick next Monday.

Dalton's promotion hopes took a major setback when going down 2-6 to Paddock I&C 'A' and now any hopes of moving upward depends on the Recreation Club slipping up but a final day meeting between them and Dalton could still be a tense affair if the Recreation Club don't claim the 6 points next week. That outcome also depends on Dalton playing their part in that scenario by winning next week's match 8-0 against already relegated Almondbury BC 'A'.

There was an amusing incident (well I found it amusing) in the Division 3 fixtures at Thorpe Green on Monday. The 4 matches starting with two pairs matches and two singles. After 5 ends and 25 minutes, two of the pairs matches markers compared scores. 'Nine-one' shouted one of them. 'Five-two' came back the response! The big discrepancy required the two markers to consult. It transpires that the four pairs were all playing the wrong opponents! Tear up the scorecards, start again and a late finish is inevitable. The names of the four teams and eight bowlers involved will not be revealed in the interests of their mental well-being.

With three more weeks of matches for the Division 4 teams, matters at both ends of the table have still to become clearer although Huddersfield Recreation Club 'B' could be relegated next week if results don't go their way although matters are now out of their hands. Their situation wasn't helped by them only collecting 2 points from their match against Kirkheaton C&BC and a repeat of that scoreline next week will see them relegated.

Meanwhile it increasingly looks like a three-way race for the two promotion places with Lindley Lib 'B' and Milnsbridge currently sitting in the two promotion spots but Lowerhouses 'B' remain well in the hunt just 5 points behind them. An 8-0 win for Lowerhouses over Paddock I&C 'B' this week pushed them firmly back into contention and their match against leaders Lindley Lib 'B' next Monday could be a pivotal moment in the promotion race.

Lindley Lib 'B' moved back into top spot after a 6-2 win over Marsh Lib on Monday taking over from Milnsbridge 'B' who slipped up when being held to a 4-4 draw by Netherton Con 'A'. That stretched Netherton Con's gap from the relegation places to 11 points and next week's encounter with their biggest rival, Paddock I&C 'B', could cement their battle to stay at this level for a second season.
