Tuesday matches a 'Day of Firsts'

Winter League

The Tuesday matches saw a day of four firsts (and an 'almost') with both greens involved.

The biggest surprise firsts saw the two Division leaders both lose for the first time this season. At Springwood, Clayton West went down 4-2 to the hosts whilst at Milnsbridge, Lowerhouses 'A' lost by the same 2-4 scoreline to Meltham. Both totally unexpected results which will give the chasing pack some hope that the season is far from over. Well done to Springwood and Meltham and that was quite a turnaround for both teams as the reverse fixtures earlier in the season saw Springwood go down 0-6 to Clayton West and Meltham losing 1-5 against Lowerhouses 'A'.

The third 'first' was the fact that this is the first matchday of the season when there hasn't been a 6-0 whitewash scoreline to report. Things must be getting tighter!

The final 'first' was a first win of the season for Huddersfield Recreation Club 'A' and they did it in the most emphatic style when recording a 5-1 win over Rastrick.

The 'first almost' involved the only team still looking for their first win of the season, Milnsbridge 'B' who shared the games 2-2 with Dalton but were just denied the aggregate win by 72-73 so were deprived of their first win in the cruellest fashion.

In the other two Tuesday fixtures Lowerhouses 'B' just failed to log their second win of the season with a 2-4 reversal against Denby Dale with the aggregate decided by a 64-67 difference. Then the third match at Milnsbridge saw the host's 'A' side return to winning ways with a 4-2 win over Thorpe Green.

Springwood greenkeeper, John Pix, completed a good day on Tuesday. For as well as being one of the team to inflict a first defeat of the season on Clayton West he also won first prize in the raffle - a Christmas cake! Next Tuesday's raffle will include a first prize of a bottle of Moet Champagne.

Just to advise teams in the Springwood Division that on the final matchday of 2020 (next Tuesday) a selection of sandwiches will be available to purchase which may well include a seasonal turkey and cranberry sauce in bread cakes for a £1 each. All individually wrapped to keep you safe.

With raffle prizes like these it’s a pity we can’t have spectators and we’ll done to Springwood for the seasonal sandwiches.
