Review of Division 2 matches completed on Monday 25 October

The first round of Division 2 fixtures was completed on Monday after matches were halted last Wednesday due to a waterlogged Springwood green. The first round of four matches included three whitewash 8-0 wins with Meltham, Springwood 'A' and the newcomers from Lindley Lib beginning the season in impressive style.

The staggered introduction to the season didn't help Denby Dale as they scurried around to get a team on the green but that they duly did but were no match for the new team from Lindley Lib who ran out 8-0 winners with a 63-25 aggregate total. That wasn't good enough to put them at the top of the week 1 table as Meltham recorded a similar 8-0 whitewash win but a slightly better 63-24 scoreline to edge their way to the top spot. This was the Meltham team's first look at the Springwood green after playing at Milnsbridge last year and they obviously enjoyed the experience although their opponents from the Recreation Club were restricted in selection due to COVID-affected bowlers being unavailable to them. With Eddie Haigh also joining the Meltham ranks they look a stronger outfit this season but tougher tests may be ahead of them.

Springwood 'A' started the season with a first-ever whitewash scoreline at the 10th time of asking. Nine matches last season failed to see them hit the ultimate scoreline suggesting a new urgency about their form this year although their player rotation system may hamper any sustained title challenge. Two new teams to the Winter League went up against each other with Jackson Bridge clocking up a 6-2 win over Paddock I&C to sit in the top half of the first league table of the season.
