The Mystery of the Missing Trophy

Updated: Dec 4, 2020

Ladies Works League

The Huddersfield Ladies Works League Pairs Trophy (The Joyce Lang Trophy) is missing.

I first became aware that the trophy was missing in 2019 when the pairs competition was played at Meltham. This is what I have been able to discover about the whereabouts of the trophy.

The pairs competition was not played in 2017 and 2018. In 2016 the trophy was won by Margaret Pointon and Sandra Proctor. The trophy was presented to Margaret at the 2016 AGM at Bradley and Colne. Sandra assures me that she never had possession of the trophy. In 2017 Margaret is pretty certain that the engraved trophy was returned to the committee at the AGM again at Bradley and Colne. The committee at that time was just two people Andrea and Norma neither of whom can recall receiving the trophy.

I did wonder if Margaret might have taken the trophy to a club presentation night at Canalside or Huddersfield Recreation Club/Moldgreen but Margaret has informed me that this did not occur so that was the end of that train of thought. Norma is also following up on the outside chance that the trophy might have been left at a presentation night at Thorpe Green where Sandra was a member.

I have been in touch with Vinnie the steward at Bradley and Colne in the hope that the trophy had been inadvertently left at the AGM but alas this has drawn a blank. Similarly I have consulted with Sharon and Dave Fox at Ballcraft (Engravers/Bowls Renovators and Giftware) in the hope that memories were incorrect and the trophy was mysteriously there, that also proved to be another dead end.

So to sum up, the most crucial time frame and the last sighting of the trophy appears to be the 2017 AGM. Were you at this meeting and do you have any recollections relating to the trophy?

All kinds of trophies do go missing for all kinds of reasons and whilst some remain missing others are found in the unlikeliest of places. For example the original Jules Rimet Trophy (FIFA World Cup) was stolen and has never been recovered whilst a trophy missing from a boys school in England turned up amazingly in a garden in Australia. With the latter scenario in mind, I remain hopeful that the trophy will turn up and that we will all be surprised at its location.

In the meantime can I canvas your help in finding the trophy. If you have even an inkling of an idea where it might be or possible leads that have not been explored do get in touch. Can I also ask the walkers amongst you to cast your eye into ditches and hedgerows, you just never know what treasures might be lurking just waiting to be found.

It must be somewhere!
