The Association was formed at a meeting in Huddersfield on Monday 15 August 1892 when representatives of Yorkshire Bowling Clubs were brought together at the initiative of a certain Mr John Davis who was Chairman, of the then bowling section, of the Huddersfield Cricket and Athletic Club.

Representatives from Huddersfield Cricket and Athletic Club, Ilkley, Clifton (Brighouse) Holbeck, Headingley, Chapeltown, Poternewton, Hunslet, Kirkstall, Primrose Hill, Ossett, Cleckheaton, Bradley, Dewsbury and Savile, Greenfield and Slaithwaite, were in attendance at that meeting and they voted yes unanimously, to agree with the formation of the Yorkshire County.

The first ever known Roses match between the White Rose of Yorkshire and the Red Rose of Lancashire took place one year later in 1893 Other notable dates are 1893 when the first ever playing of the Yorkshire Challenge Cup took place, and 1895 when the first Yorkshire Merit was competed for. A few years later in 1915, the Henry Taylor Cup was first played.

As far as the Ladies the Hyman Morris Trophy began in 1927 and the earliest Junior Merit was the Boys in 1973. 2007/2008 saw the Ladies amalgamate with the Men's section and a year later saw the Yorkshire Referees Society become another member of the Council.

Yorkshire has won the British Senior Inter-County Championship twenty times and been runners-up on Seventeen occasions. The first being in 1923. In modern times under the auspices of BCGBA since 1950 Yorkshire became separate from South Yorkshire and they have won the title Fourteen times and been runners up eleven times
