Winter League

Review of the Division 5 matches played at Netherton Con on Thursday 26 January

Netherton bowlers were rather confused this week when they turned up for their Thursday fixture programme to find it wasn't raining and the sun was shining.

This being a totally foreign environment to the one that has persevered throughout the winter months but has not dampened the spirits of the Division 5 bowlers who continue to turn up in impressive numbers each week. None more so than last Thursday when over 70 bowlers and spectators enjoyed the climate of a planet far from Netherton but welcome all the same.

The top three teams all re-emphasised their bids for promotion by all winning their weekly fixtures with leaders Almondbury BC 'B' taking the leading spot with an 8-0 win over Huddersfield Rugby Club. Milnsbridge 'C' and Thorpe Green 'C' remain within range after they both won their matches 6-2 against Netherton Con 'B' and Springwood 'C' respectively. That outcome leaves Almondbury the favourites for the title with a 4 points lead and one more match to go. Milnsbridge and Thorpe Green seem to be fighting it out for the other promotion place although nothing can be taken for granted.

The first Division 5 scoreline of 5-3 of the season, and only the 4th in any division this season, was played out between Golcar C&BC and Brockholes 'B' with a 52-52 drawn aggregate responsible for the unusual division of points. Golcar C&BC won this friendly (I saw cheek kissing at the end of matches) encounter and at the same time condemn the Rugby Club to the wooden spoon.

Another close race has developed in the Division 5 Top Bowler stakes with three bowlers level at the top on the 8-win mark and separated by the Averages at present with one match left to go. The eventual winner will receive the new Dave Horsfall Cup with the current leaderboard below.
