Recreation Club bowler takes LDT title

Veterans League

ree

Andrew Wike of the Huddersfield Recreation Club is the 2022 Veterans League Lower Division Trophy Champion after winning through Finals Day at Outlane on Friday. This was the second time that Outlane had hosted this Final, the first time being 2019, and once again they proved to be genial hosts with a green in pristine condition.

In a field of 8 strong quarter-finalists with the two favourites progressing through the two halves of the draw to set up the anticipated Andrew Wike v John Bloomer headline final.

The green was in immaculate condition with plenty of grass showing despite the recent arid conditions and with the sun shining was running fairly fast. As the sun dropped later in the afternoon the pace changed and tactics changed accordingly.

This competition is open for any bowler, 6-man or 10-man league except for anyone who has bowled a single match in Division 1 or 2 this season. Andrew started the Final with a 3-point handicap advantage, a lead which he held until the 20th end. John claimed the front spot then with a 15-14 lead and seemingly set to progress to the title.

The favoured tactic that John had used in his previous two rounds, to great effect, of bowling corner-to-corner had been discarded with a preference for round marks over the crown which Andrew managed to counter on a regular basis. Finally breaking back once again to retake the lead and finish up a 21-19 Champion.
