Winter League
We have received the first official application from a team to join the Winter League for the 2022-23 season. That has come from the Huddersfield Rugby Union Bowling Club and they are now first in the queue to become new members of the League next year.
This is another sign of the progressive nature of winter bowling in Huddersfield with a continuing interest in all-year-round bowling. This year there are 27 teams competing in three divisions each of 9 teams over an 18-week season. That was a huge increase on the 2020-21 season when 14 teams established the first year of the new league which, due to COVID lockdowns, was never completed.
We are happy to take applications at any time and we would like to think that we will be able to accommodate all such applications for next season. That will always depend on the total number of teams and the number of clubs prepared to host our league games. At present our 3 host greens can accommodate a maximum of 30 teams for an 18-week season. The RUBC application takes potential membership up to 28 and at our current growth rate we are possibly looking for, at least, one more host club for the 2022-23 season.
We are always happy to talk to any club that is interested in learning more about the implications and benefits of hosting matches through the winter. There are good financial reasons for hosting matches but our current hosts have found that it doesn't stop at immediate financial reasons as justification for assuming the role.
