Bowling News
Continuing the alternative league tables based on varying criteria I came across this model when a bowler was telling me that his Veterans 10-Man League side would never have been relegated if they had played as well in the first half of the season as they had in the second half. So I did the business by following up on his claim and it was rubbish. However I did find that some teams did recover in the 2nd half of the season to improve dramatically their league position.
So I thought I would share that finding with you by comparing the Veterans 10-Man League tables in two halves. The first half being based on matches played from 1 April to 30 June. Then the 2nd half from 1 July to the end of the season. Each time I retained the final real placing for each team. As well as for interest this information could be usefully employed by the serious Fantasy League contenders in identifying teams that are on the improvement scale and worthy of consideration for inclusion in the 2023 Fantasy League competition.
Looking first for teams that performed notably better in the second half of the season compared with the first half. This picks out Clayton West (Div.1), New Mill 'A' and Lowerhouses in Division 2 where Thorpe Green was one of the two worse-performing teams in the first and second halves of the season but still avoided relegation.
The biggest drop of all came in Division 3 where Denby Dale topped the table at the halfway point but then finished in a relegation place when just counting the second half of the season points total. Marsh United 'B' would have avoided relegation if they had performed in the first half of the season as well as they did in the second half. Outlane was the pick of the Division 4 second-half wonder teams whilst Ravensknowle Park were going the other way. In Division 5 it is Holmfirth 'B's points tally that catches the eye after the halfway point in the season. The only team in any division to be top in both halves was in Division 5 where Kirkheaton Con 'B' were dominant throughout.
Plenty of other examples as well in the tables below. The green background stats show the points collected in the first half of the season whilst the yellow background highlights the 2nd half performances. In both sets of tables, the left-hand column shows the actual end-of-season position for all the teams.
