Thorpe Green bowler, Ian Briggs, lifted the Winter Cup working his way past three stubborn opponents to become the second holder of this trophy. Ian justified his status of favourite by using his long game to good effect on a Springwood green grateful for the hazy sunshine, that played well all day.

It was a day of tight matches with four of the seven games played on the day extending to 27 ends before a conclusion was reached. Surprise quarter-finalist John Sunter of Huddersfield Recreation Club continued his good form in this competition by matching Ian Briggs's long game on occasions to have his fair share of seeing the jack and only lacked consistency. Taking on Tim Poulter, another scratch bowler in the Semi-Final who had beaten his Clayton West teammate, Ed Haigh, to reach this stage and again a marked contrast in tactics saw Ian progress after Tim fought back from 8-18 down to finish off losing to 15.

In the other half of the draw Stuart Greaves progressed steadily beating Milnsbridge bowler Graham Sykes by collecting eight 2's in his 21 and followed that up with a tight game against Netherton Con's Ray Clayton who had just pipped Jim Baxter 21-20 in their quarter-final tie. A 21-17 scoreline saw Stuart into the Final. This was another close encounter where there was never more than 2 points between the pair until they were 14 across and then Ian stepped up a gear to take the tie away from his opponent. Ian bowled the most consistently on the day to run out a deserved winner and second holder of the trophy.
