Huddersfield Vets 25-31 Leeds Vets

Veterans League

It was not an unexpected defeat for the Huddersfield Inter-District team when they faced their opposite numbers from Leeds but there was some hope generated from the outcome. The overall result was a 31-25 win for the Leeds team but Huddersfield did inflict a first defeat of the season on the Leeds Away team by 18-10. This was not a total surprise to me as I noted in my preview of the match that the selected home green of Lowerhouses would present more problems than most local greens to a visiting team and give the home team a chance of picking up some points. So it proved.

The away side could only produce two winners and that amounted to a 7-point score to add to the home team's total and the eventual 25-31 result. That outcome was a setback to the Leeds team's bid for the title as they drop a place to third and are now 61 points behind West Riding, the runaway leaders. Seeing as the maximum that any team can win in a single fixture is 56 points, the engraver can now prepare his template to record the 2026 Champions name on the trophy.

Bradford currently sit second in the table after 35-21 over Aire & Wharfe but they will have lost that lofty position after the next round of fixtures on Friday 21 August when they will have a bye. Leeds are only 2 points behind them in the table and they will play their match in hand over bottom of the table, Castleford, in the next round of fixtures.

The Huddersfield team has two matches still to play and they are against Aire & Wharfe and then finally Bradford who are destined to finish third. The best that the Huddersfield team can expect to finish is 4th place and that will mean overtaking a Halifax team that have still to play West Riding and Wakefield. It will probably come down to the final day of the season and even fourth position is nothing to get excited about. There is still a real risk of being overtaken by Skipton and Aire & Wharfe who we meet in the next round of matches so giving an edge to that fixture.
