Memories
Continuing our new series of articles about the history of local bowling competitions to coincide with the running of the 2024 version as the Finals Day of the Weston Park Trophy is staged tomorrow (Friday 5 April). The one local bowler still involved has a special reason for wanting to win the competition as explained below in Dave Parkin's latest article.
No.3 - THE WESTON PARK TROPHY by Dave Parkin
On Saturday 6th April at Brockholes BC, the 8th edition of the Weston Park Trophy run in memory of Paul Sykes by his family will take place with a strong field of 16 bowlers below.

As you can see below from the Roll of Honour, a new name will be engraved on this trophy awarded to the eventual winner this year as no previous winner advanced to the final stages.. This event raises money for a worthy cause, the Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield which is a cancer hospital that I know well as I lived nearby for 3 years in the late 1980’s.

The event was started by Paul’s family in 2016 in his memory as a fundraiser for the charity & from small acorns, it has developed into a must play early season event for the local bowling community & those from slightly further away too. This year, the 8-year total raised for Weston Park by the Sykes family through this event is expected to reach £5,000 with a similar amount raised over the same period through other charity events involving the family.
One person who is desperate to get his name on the trophy is local lad, Jack Dyson who bowled alongside Paul at Brockholes as a youngster. He will go into this event hoping to go one better than the last two editions.
Â
An incredible amount of money has been raised so far & this Saturday, a fun packed day ahead awaits the bowlers & guests at Brockholes, if you’re at a loose end, get on down there & see some fine bowling. If you can’t make it, Paul’s son, Liam will be updating the social media world via the page below
