Friday's must-win Inter-District match

Updated: 12 hours ago

Veterans League

The next round of fixtures in the Yorkshire Veterans Inter-District competition is on Friday (30th May) when the Huddersfield team takes on their Aire & Wharfe counterparts. This is a must-win match for the Huddersfield team if they are to retain any interest in the outcome of the 2025 title race. Having had a difficult start to the season the Huddersfield team won one and lost one and now is the time to kick on with a series of must-win matches. The next four matches are all against teams they must beat if they are to feature in the title race as it reaches a climax at the end of August.

The home team play their leg of the match at Brockholes after the success in their last match there. The team is John Bloomer, Andy Carter, Mick Chapman, Robert Dickinson, Stephen Haigh, Graham Sigsworth, Ray Whitwam and Andy Wike. Reserves Mark Richardson, Peter Kain. Non-playing captain Frank Greenwood. Manager David Armitage.

The away team is Dave Pollard, Tim Poulter, Peter Hopkinson, Steve Mallinson, Dave Sykes, Edwin Haigh, Derek Hewitt and Garry Senior. Reserves Roger Stopford and Adrian Cooper whilst the captain Malcolm Gilbert is in the unusual position of being non-playing. The away leg is being played at Rufford Park, Yeadon. Both matches have a 1.00pm start time.

Of the top teams Halifax have the easiest-looking fixture on paper this week as they meet a Castleford team which has still to win any match home or away. Two strong contenders, Leeds and Bradford, go head-to-head and should that result in a close outcome then could open the door to a climb up the table for the Huddersfield team. Leaders West Riding are without a match this week and could even slip into the bottom half of the table as a result.
