Veterans League
For a second consecutive year Frank Greenwood beat Gordon Walker in the Over-80's KO Final to make that three wins (2017, 2021 and now 2022) for Frank. It also makes it a third consecutive runner-up title for Gordon (Kirkheaton Con) having also lost the 2019 final to Eddie Hine (Kirkheaton C&BC).
At one stage it didn't look like Frank was even going to make the final as his semi-final opponent, Mike Wood (Brockholes) led 20-19 with the jack in his hand. he bowled a mark just over the crown from his corner position. But then sent down two short woods allowing Frank to pinch one and then take a winner with another longer corner mark to progress to the final.
Such a disappointing end for Mike who had bowled really well up until then leading 12-9 and then 18-15 but Frank hasn't achieved his success over many years by conceding defeat easily and that was the case once again this year as he pegged back the four-handicap lead his opponent started with.
The final was a bit of an anti-climax with neither bowler reaching the heights that have been a feature of their bowling over the season and in particular in this competition. Both still bowl in Division 1 teams but a one-sided final saw Frank lift the trophy for a third time and when he returns next year he will be 90 and who is to say that he wont be a finalist once again then.
SEMI-FINAL LINE-UP (Left to Right) Mike Wood (Brockholes), Frank Greenwood (Golcar Lib), Bernie Toon (Referee), Gordon Walker (Kirkheaton Con) and Roy Sutton (Slaithwaite)
