Winter League
Preview of the final matches of the Divisions 1 and 2 season on Wednesday 8 February
The final round of Division 1 and 2 fixtures with matters at both ends of both divisions still to be resolved building up to a grand climax of the third season of Winter League bowling. Lower Hopton have a Division 1 one-point lead over Thorpe Green 'A' and are strong favourites to retain their title with a match against already relegated Lindley BC 'A' this week.
Meanwhile Thorpe Green 'A' take on Clayton West who would need an unlikely series of results to end up relegated today although a 0-8 defeat coupled with a 6-2 win for Lindley Lib 'A' over Kirkheaton Cons would see three teams level on 54 points and the 'Aggregate For' deciding figure coming into play.
Four names are in the frame for the second relegation place with Lindley Lib needing a big win over fellow strugglers Kirkheaton Con with the losers likely to go down although New Millers remain in the picture as well with a match against Meltham who secured their Division 1 future with a win last week.
At Christmas Lindley BC 'B' had a 10-point lead at the top of the Division 2 table but since then that lead has disappeared and they could even miss out on promotion if they continue with a final day similar result although bottom of the table Rastrick 'A' are this week's opposition so not the biggest threat that was possible. Three points for Lowerhouses 'A' from their match against Springwood 'A' will secure the title for the new leaders who are already assured of promotion. Jackson Bridge really need an 8-0 win over relegation rivals Denby Dale to save themselves from joining Rastrick 'A' from dropping through the trapdoor but even that may not be enough with Springwood 'A' and Denby Dale within range but both with better 'Aggregate For' totals which would surely come into play if that 8-points gap is pulled back.
It is going to be an interesting day and a fitting climax to the season. The following Wednesday (15th) sees the Qualifying Rounds of the Winter Cup for the top two divisions with an 11.30am start as usual.
