Winter League

A review of all the Division 5 matches played on Thursday 17 November

It has not been a good week for any of the top teams in all 5 divisions of the Winter League but especially in Division 5.

We have previously reported on two of the division leaders being dislodged from that prime position and narrow escapes for the other two. Today we report on a major shake-up in Division 5 where the top three teams were all beaten at a very wet Netherton Con on Thursday including a first defeat of the season for the leaders Thorpe Green 'C'.

Very testing conditions throughout the day's bowling with consistent rain making bowling difficult and uncomfortable but the bowlers just got on with the matter in hand and shock results were the order of the day.

It was Milnsbridge 'C' that caused the biggest upset by ending Thorpe Green 'C's winning start to the season with a 6-2 victory. Thorpe Green retain a six-point lead at the top but that is mainly due to their nearest rivals failings rather than their own efforts. With surprise defeats also for Netherton Con 'B' and Springwood 'C' means that they hang on to top spot for now but the pack is closing in on them.

Last week Almondbury BC 'B' were on the wrong end of a shock result when going down 0-8 to Golcar C&BC but they reversed that trend this Thursday when beating 3rd placed Springwood 'C' by the same scoreline. With 2nd placed Netherton Con 'B' providing Brockholes 'B' with their first win of the season by 6-2 that shot the Almondbury team up to second place in the table. It may have been Brockholes' first win of the season but their Aggregate For total tells a different story. If league placings were determined on aggregate scores then the Brockholes team would be sat in 3rd place with 247 points rather than the foot of the table where they currently reside.

Golcar C&BC added to last week's first win of the season by overcoming Huddersfield Rugby Union Club 6-2 to move above them in the table and complete the shake-up of surprise results which keeps matters interesting as the evidence points to the fact that all teams appear capable of beating each other so more shocks are likely as the season progresses.
