Division 5 dogfight for 2nd promotion place

Winter League

Review of the Division 5 fixtures played on Thursday 15 February at Netherton Cons

A 6-2 win for Slaithwaite over Mirfield A leaves them needing just two points from their last two fixtures to formerly clinch promotion and knowing that four points will secure the Division 5 Champions title as well. The team is heading for a double celebration with the Top Bowler award already won by a team member (see further down this posting).

That defeat for the Mirfield A side leaves them needing 2 points from their last two fixtures to avoid a bottom two finish. Even that may not be enough to save them from the drop as the proposed move to 8 teams in a division for next season could see them drop anyway.

The Huddersfield Recreation Club B team are almost certainly relegated for the third consecutive year (sorry lads) after defeat to Brockholes B and with the host club's B team also already doomed to the drop as well. The Netherton Con B side may be going down but a second consecutive win, this time over Almondbury BC B, is too little too late but welcome all the same and shows what might have been.

That win for Brockholes B moved them into the second promotion place leaving them as one of three teams competing for that coveted second promotion position. Springwood C and Jackson Bridge being the other two teams with Jackson Bridge moving into contention after an 8-0 win over Outlane which practically ended Outlane's chances of featuring in the end of season push. All three contenders have played the same number of matches so lots to play for over the final two weeks of the season.

Slaithwaite bowlers dominate the Top Bowler chart as they take 3 of the top 4 positions with captain Chris Sykes leading the way with an unbeaten record over 13 matches played. Places are determined by the most games won and then by the Average Difference and bowlers have to play 60% of their team's matches to qualify. With only two matches left to play that means that Chris cannot be caught in the race for the end of season accolade and will duly receive the Netherton Greenkeepers Trophy which will be awarded for the first time at the end of the season party.
