A LONG WEEKEND FOR A NOT VERY AVERAGE BOWLING CLUB
Thongsbridge Bowling Club’s weekend started with a quite genteel Thursday afternoon hosting a preliminary round of the HVBA’s Open Pairs competition. Thursday evening we fielded two teams in the Huddersfield Ladies League, a routine evenings bowling.
The pace picked up on Friday with the writer visiting the first Coaching Coaches day at Lindley Bowling Club where 10 bowlers were put through their paces by Mark Bircumshaw of Coach Bowls with the aim of attaining their Level 1 Coaching accreditation. This was an eye opener for the experienced bowlers observing from the sidelines but seemed perfectly logical when considering the experience of someone stepping onto the green for the first time.
Back at Thongsbridge the green was being prepared for the Yorkshire Inter-District Veterans League match between Huddersfield and Castleford which kicked off at 1 pm. Castleford were an unknown opponent not having played in the comp since 2019 and having had a bye in the first round of this years competition. The first four came off the green where Huddersfield were just leading but it was looking like a tight run thing, however the second four put the tie to bed convincingly and news came from the away team that they too had secured a comfortable victory giving Huddersfield an overall 35-21 scoreline.
On with the league bowling at 6.45 in the evening with two works league teams playing home and away under the Marshalls Landscaping Products banner.
Saturday brought new challenges fielding 3 full teams in the Huddersfield League and managing just 5 wins from the 28 bowlers but great to see people enjoying Saturday afternoon bowling once again. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we hosted Kirkheaton Con and Bradley & Colne. Our weekends activities were not over at this stage as we were organising a fund-raising concert at Holmfirth Civic featuring Hade Edge Choir and Huddersfield Choral’s Youth Choirs.
Bowlers had to rush back from their afternoon matches to greet the musicians at 6 pm and welcome the audience who were queuing outside the door by 7 pm. The audience enjoyed a brilliant nights entertainment from the musicians and joined in a rousing finale of Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory frantically waving the union flag and cheering the musicians to the rafters. The weekend’s not over yet for our bowling club. Sunday morning’s free drop-in sessions and an evening of bowling at the absolute pinnacle where the Thongsbridge Super Cup winning team started their defence of the title.
Our visitors, Beaumaris of Anglesey, arrived with a mini bus full of bowlers and supporters and a 25 chalk deficit from Friday nights home leg. All four games of 31 up went on the green simultaneously so that our Welsh visitors could be back home before midnight and the spoils went to the home team on the night for a convincing overall victory. Our guests were treated to a Yorkshire supper of Quality Butchers pie and peas and some good-humoured banter.
What a weekend!
