Winter League
Review of the Division 2 match results played at Cowcliffe on Tuesday 29 October
Last year Hanging Heaton and Marsh United finished well ahead of the field in Division 3 in their first season in the League. After their promotion they have continued where they left off as both clocked up 8-0 wins on the opening day of the Division 2 season. They saw off the two Lindley teams and although there may be stiffer tests to come it was still an impressive opening to the Division that is likely to be the most competitive of any this season. Hanging Heaton inflicted an 0-8 loss on to Lindley Lib B which put them on top of the inaugural table. Marsh United had a similar whitewash-winning entry into the season and sit second in the table after seeing off Lindley BC B.
Clayton West was a casualty of the League reorganisation last season and had a first Division 2 match against a Lowerhouses A team that finished below them in the table last season and who they beat twice in League fixtures so a 2-6 defeat this week was a surprise. The other Division 1 team to drop a Division was Golcar Lib and they made a more positive start to life in Division 2 by beating Milnsbridge A who only missed out on promotion to Division 1 last season by a single point.
The new Cowcliffe host green seemed to meet with everyone's approval with a wonderfully prepared green, a range of hot and cold food offerings, a warm welcome and the sun shone as well. However the day was soured by one of the bowlers wearing the wrong footwear and leaving some big marks on the previously immaculate green. It seems that one bowler was wearing heavy footwear totally inappropriate for a bowling green and unacceptable. Checks are going to be made in future and bowlers not wearing flat shoes will not be allowed on to the green.
