Review of the Division 5 fixtures played at Netherton Con on 12 January

The result matched the weather for Thorpe Green 'C' as they were thumped 0-8 by Milnsbridge 'C' which opened the door for Almondbury BC 'B' to overtake them and go top of the table.

A 6-2 win for the Almondbury side over Springwood 'C' enabled them to pass the leaders but only on a better aggregate total as both are on 56 points. That puts them 2 points ahead of Milnsbridge 'C' who move into contention after that great win over the leaders. That result completed a league double over their rivals for the Division 5 title.

That win for Almondbury BC extended their unbeaten run to 7 matches and sets up an epic ending to the season with, at least, three teams now involved in the title and promotion charge. Next Thursday sees the top two teams going up against each other so things could change once again and with Milnsbridge having the easiest-looking run into the end of the season, with remaining fixtures against 3 of the bottom 4 teams, that two-point deficit could soon disappear.

Brockholes 'B' had s single win in their first 8 matches in their first Winter League season, and then just before Christmas, they got some sponsored green fleece jackets to wear. Since then they have won all three of their fixtures with the latest being a 6-2 win over Netherton Con 'B' to lift them to their highest position of the season. What a difference a green fleece can make!

The meeting of the bottom two teams saw the Rugby Club gain revenge for an early season 2-6 defeat by Golcar C&BC with a win by the same scoreline. Both teams remain firmly anchored to the foot of the table but it is worth noting that the RUBC's total of 28 points so far is the best total of any of the teams at the bottom of their respective divisions.
