Winter League
The Winter League season trundles on with most teams passing the halfway mark and the rest will do very soon. We've examined, in some detail, the chances of four unbeaten teams in Divisions 3, 7, 8, and 10. Time to revisit those tables and identify those teams with unbeaten records in the 2025-26 season and does being unbeaten guarantee an end-of-season promotion?
Division 2: Clayton West Played-8 Won-7 Drawn-1 Lost-0 Points-54 Points per game-6.75 Positon-1st
Division 5: Mirfield A Played-8 Won-5 Drawn-3 Lost-0 Points-44 Points per game-5.5 Position-2nd
Division 6: Cowcliffe B Played-7 Won-6 Drawn-1 Lost-0 Points-50 Points per game-7.1 Position-1st
Division 10: Skel Windmill B Played-7 Won-3 Drawn-4 Lost-0 Points-36 Points per game-5.1 Position-3rd
It is interesting that two of the teams above, despite having not lost a match all season, do not top their respective tables. Mirfield A sit in 2nd place in Division 5 after drawing three of their league games, which has counted against them. A similar story in Division 10 where Skel Windmill B have drawn 4 of their 7 fixtures but are out of the two promotion places at present. Is it possible for a team to go all season without getting beaten but still lose out on a top two place? Continuing the current sequence would likely produce that outcome in Division 10.
An unbeaten record for Division 2 leaders Clayton West sees them 16 points ahead of their nearest rival and surely heading for the title and promotion back to the top division after going down two years ago. A third from bottom placing and a reorganisation of the divisions to settle for an 8-teams per division format cost them that place at the end of the 2023-24 season.
Down in Division 6, Cowcliffe B are unbeaten after 7 fixtures and have the best points per match record of any of the unbeaten teams but have failed to shake off a persistent Brockholes B team who sit just 4 points behind them at present. Cowcliffe B are used to remaining unbeaten as they did in the previous 2024-25 season when they only lost once and that was in the penultimate match of that season. Prior to that they had won the first 12 matches.
Maybe all four unbeaten teams will lose those records before reaching the 10-match mark as that has proven to be the maximum barrier in all the other divisions this season. Then again, maybe it won't. The ultimate target of all these teams has to be to go unbeaten all season and that feat has only ever been completed 3 times before.
An unbeaten season-long record is quite an achievement in the Winter League and has only ever happened three times before. Winning every match in a season has only been mastered once before in the 6-year record of the Winter League and that was by Meltham in the 2021-22 season. What made it all the more memorable was the fact that it was achieved over a 16-week season with 9 teams in each of the three divisions at that time.
