Winter Cup Draw of 104 bowlers

Winter League

All the draws for the five Qualifying Rounds have now been made and are listed below. At the end of the day we finished up with the magnificent total of 104 entries. It is really amazing that we get this number of bowlers aged over-60 prepared to bowl outside in the middle of winter in a competition when the only prize is a trophy. We don't pay any cash prizes to the winners, that is not what the competition, or indeed the League, is all about. For clarity, the £3 entry fee is divided to pay the host clubs £2.50 per entry to cover green fees and refreshments. Then 50p goes towards the cost of purchasing and engraving trophies to be kept by the winner and runner-up.

The Winter Cup was donated to the League by Kirkheaton Cons bowlers Garry Senior and Tony Butterfield and they have been instrumental in deciding the format of 5 individual qualifying competitions which I believe is a major contribution to the number of entries received. Maybe next year we will see these qualifying rounds continue to bowl down to produce their own divisional champions as well.

Bowlers are reminded that they should all be there for the advertised start time of 11.30am. Anyone not available when called to the green will be eliminated from the competition. Any such eliminations may see some later matches called earlier than the expected start time. Be there for 11.30am and if you aren't playing until later offer your services as a marker or measurer. All bowlers play off scratch in the qualifying rounds.

Each of the 5 Divisions has its own Qualifying Round with the best 4 bowlers progressing from each green to the 'Round of the Last 20' which will be played at Springwood on Wednesday 12 April. At this point in the competition, handicaps will be in place to even up the chances of all bowlers. The last 8 bowlers from that day will progress to Finals Day which will again be held at Springwood on Sunday 16 April. The start times for the Round of the Last 20 and Finals Day will be 1.00pm.

The Qualifying Rounds at Milnsbridge and Lindley Lib will all be 21-Up. Elsewhere the decision will be confirmed on the day but because of the number of bowlers involved it is likely that all rounds will be 15-Up at Springwood, Thorpe Green and Netherton Con. The matches in the Last 20 and thereafter will all be 21-Up. The draw for the 'Round of the Last 20' will be made at the meeting of the Management Committee on Thursday 23 March.

Last year's inaugural competition winner, Steve Haigh of Lindley BC, is defending his title Good luck to all 104 of you we hope that you enjoy the competition.
