Winter League
A review of the Division 2 league matches played on Wednesday 22 December
A frosty morning failed to clear the Springwood and Milnsbridge greens for the 12noon start times but that didn't delay the keen bowlers of the Winter League. Any concerns about the playability of the green were soon dispelled as bowlers concentrated on following the jack, an almost impossible task as the woods gathered frost to completely distort the bias and send woods in all directions.
Any initial concerns about the safety aspect of bowlers slipping on the white surface were also quickly overcome as it soon became clear that this wasn't a problem. As the traffic on the green intensified the white stuff disappeared and bowlers only then had to contend with a fast running hard green which has hardly been a feature of the winter season so far.
On the Division 2 results front Meltham won again and by the same 8-0 scoreline which they have clocked up in 7 of their 9 matches this season, an amazing record and one that will see them in Division 1 next season no doubt. Despite that wonderful record Meltham still cannot get away from Lindley Lib who hang on doggedly to second place and are only 8 points behind them. Both teams had 8-0 wins this week with Meltham beating Huddersfield Recreation Club 'A' and Lindley Lib overcoming Denby Dale by the same whitewash scoreline for the second time this season.
In fact, three of the matches in Division 2 ended in 8-0 scores with Springwood 'A' joining in with a whitewash win over Thorpe Green 'B'. All four matches were the same results and scorelines as recorded when these teams all met earlier in the season. Jackson Bridge moved ahead of Denby Dale after beating Paddock I&C 6-2 and that probably leaves the bottom four teams left to determine between them which two teams are to be relegated at the end of the season.
