Town Centre bowling green

Did you know that there used to be a town centre bowling green just two minutes walk from the railway station? This vision super-imposed its original location on the present day map.

The bowling green is clearly shown on the O.S. map below along with the railway station and The George Hotel. This extract from a 1851 Ordnance Survey map shows the siting of the bowling green. The only reference to it being 'that it was probably lost when John William Street was opened up'.

Even though the undated photo provided by David Catherine below is entitled 'Bowling green by the George Hotel' I failed to identify any part of the green in the photo. That could be down to me.
