Another contribution from Dave Parkin as he delves into the archives of the Huddersfield Examiner to bring us stories from the past covering the development of the Huddersfield Saturday League.
The History of Saturday Bowling in Huddersfield
A Trilogy by Dave Parkin
Introduction:
As the HUDDERSFIELD BOWLING ASSOCIATION intend to debate a change of playing format at their AGM in February, here is a potted account of what has gone on in their 127 year history.
It will be in 3 parts:
1896 to 1942
1943 to 1969
1970 onwards
Part 1: 1896-1942
In 1896, 3 years after the Yorkshire Association was formed, 9 clubs got together & formed the Huddersfield Association. A 10th club played in the first season & they played each other once at neutral venues in a league format.
As you can see from the snip below, it transpired that the two unbeaten teams played in the last match which Taylor Hill won to become the 1st winners of the BINNS CHALLENGE CUP (known affectionally later as “Little Jim”) which was donated by Mr Binns of Lindley BC.
By 1904, a new Cup to be called the SUBSCRIPTION CUP was commissioned by the Association & the BINNS CHALLENGE CUP was relegated to be played for by the second teams.
The first SUBSCRIPTION CUP was played on a knockout basis like the BINNS CHALLENGE CUP was after the first season.
As the clippings from 1904 aren’t of great quality, I have reproduced the draw with as much detail as possible.
The Huddersfield cup format meant that clubs could only play one game per season in addition to any games they played in the YORKSHIRE CUP. A solution was sought in 1907 & lasted 4 years with one more cup, the DRAYTON CUP being added.. This was the first time any cup was played for on an Home & Away basis (BINNS CUP) but the SUBSCRIPTION CUP was played for in sections
One additional cup was added, the LITTLEWOOD CUP. First played for in 1925 by the 32 x 2nd teams of the clubs in the SUBSCRIPTION CUP as a straight ko. The DRAYTON CUP was played for by teams not in the SUBSCRIPTION CUP & their 2nd teams played for the BINNS CUP.
The Huddersfield cup format remained mainly unaltered apart from numbers up until the 1940’s
To be continued ....
Tomorrow: Part 2: 1943-1969
