The Good Old Days - competitions remembered

Memories

This is notice of a series of articles looking at the history of some of the local competitons to coincide with this year's episode in that sequence. Dave Parkin is pulling together the stories behind the titles as he asks if these really were the Good Old Days or has history distorted the truth about these events.

Dave Parkin takes up the introduction of this new series and sets out his objectives and scope of the competitions to be covered.

As the Winter bowling season draws to a close in Huddersfield with the traditional end of season Champion of Champions at The Griffin on Easter Sunday, the new Summer season gets off to a bang with 3 local competitions with finals the following weekend.

  • Paul Sykes Memorial - Weston Park Trophy  Brockholes Saturday April 6th (8th edition)

  • Colne Valley - Roger Crowther Memorial Longwood Sunday April 7th (3rd edition)

  • Liberal League – John Carstairs Memorial Mixed Pairs 2023 – Almondbury Liberal Sunday April 7th

The Winter Cup & all the Veterans events will get the usual website coverage.

For the next 7 months, I will endeavour to preview each final played in the following local leagues with some history of each event.

Mainly for the Leagues of Gentlemen that run local comps for local people.

  • Huddersfield League – 7 events

  • Colne Valley - 4 events

  • Mirfield League – 2 events

  • Dearne & Don – 2 events

If an organiser wishes to have their event covered, please get in touch with Jeff at least 10 days before the final

Good luck to everyone starting bowling this weekend
