Winter League
Review of the Division 3 & 4 fixtures played on Monday 18 December 2023
Quite a day in the Division 3 title race with the first change of leadership all season. Marsh United suffered their first loss of 2023 when going down 0-8 to Rastrick which opened the door for Hanging Heaton to take over at the top with a massive 63-11 League record aggregate score and the 8-0 points when overwhelming Primrose Hill Lib.
That shock win for Rastrick was well earned and a real surprise after previously losing 0-8 to the top two teams but not this time. That result pushes them into the top half of the table although 28 points behind the new table toppers.
That result means that Hanging Heaton now have a two points lead over the Marsh team and the meeting of the two teams in late February is likely to prove critical in determining the outcome of the Division 3 title race.
Milnsbridge B have still to play the top two teams (Marsh United twice) so could still influence the destination of the title and could still push themselves into the promotion battle. However they did themselves no favours when sharing the points with Dalton 4-4 this week and needed a 52-50 aggregate win to draw the match which leaves them 10 points behind the second promotion place. In the other fixture Thorpe Green B beat Paddock I&C 6-2 to leave the Paddock side increasingly adrift in the relegation places.
There was also a shock 0-8 scoreline in the Division 4 programme as Netherton Con A's four match unbeaten run was ended in emphatic style by Lowerhouses B who clocked up a 5th successive win to finally move out of the relegation places. After sharing second place with two other teams they now findthemselves 6 points behind them both as Lindley Lib C and Thorpe Green C both collected 6-2 wins on Monday. Lindley Lib C just edging the aggregate 58-57 over Kirkheaton C&BC and Thorpe Green C ending a three match losing run when condemning Springwood B to another day at the foot of the table.
None of these results threatened to narrow the leaders hold on top spot as New Mill B beat Milnsbridge C 6-2 to maintain their four points lead on the top spot. So all that completes the Divisons 3 and 4 2023 fixture programme as teams look forward to the New Year and hopes of title, promotion or relegation-avoiding performaces and we wish them every success but more importantly we hope that they continue to enjoy the format and experience of winter bowling.
