Which Huddersfield League team won the Subscription Cup one year then the Drayton Cup the year after?
For those unclear about the question, I should explain that the Subscription Cup is the trophy awarded to the team that wins the top Huddersfield Saturday League Division. The Drayton Cup goes to the winner of the 2nd Division.
It did happen, this is not a trick question. Answer at the foot of the page.
Here is a copy of the records from the Huddersfield League Bowlsnet history pages.
 | SUBSCRIPTION CUP | DRAYTON CUP |
1971 | Almondbury Lib | Linthwaite Hall |
1972 | Crosland Moor Lib | Marsh United |
1973 | Kirkheaton Con | ICI |
1974 | Crosland Moor Lib | Kirkheaton Con |
1975 | Hudds C&AC | Almondbury Lib |
THE ANSWER Up until 1973 the format of the League was very different with four sections of 4 or 5 teams at the top level. The teams in each section played each other to provide a section winner who progressed through to the knock-out stage of the Subscription Cup where an eventual winner emerged. Kirkheaton Con won that honour in 1973 which was the last year the competition was played under that format.
The following year there was a new format with the two top divisions being formed. Despite winning the Cup in 1973 the Kirkheaton Con team was only put into the second level (the Drayton Cup) for the 1974 season which they promptly won.
