Memories

The Wentworth Arms Hotel Bowling Club was sponsored by David Brown's steelworks and was sited behind the Wentworth Arms on Sheffield Road in Penistone.

The picture above is of the Wentworth Arms Hotel Bowling Club in Penistone An old Bowling Club sponsored by David Brown's steelworks was sited behind the Wentworth Arms on Sheffield Road. This plot is now misnamed 'Wentworth Mews' where houses were built in the 1990s. A 'Mews' house is supposed to be converted stables.

The current Penistone and District Bowling Club was founded in 1909. It was opened on 29th April by Mr J B Durrans, of the Thurlstone and has a green and clubhouse on Back Lane near to the Tesco car park. The club is a hidden gem right in the centre of the old market town of Penistone, South Yorkshire. It is a friendly little “Crown Green” bowling club which has 2 greens, one of which has an artificial carpet and can be bowled on all year round. In between the two greens sits the clubhouse.

Main Green The main green has comfortable surrounds some of which is covered whilst open seating enables you to watch the bowling in the sun, enjoying a pint or a glass of wine. We are presently working on bringing the standard of the green back to its former glory when it hosted many district finals and county matches. The green benefits from having floodlights which enables evening bowling in the early and late part of the season.

All weather Green In 2009, as part of the £15 million town centre regeneration scheme, the club’s grounds were extended in order to provide a new floodlight all-weather bowling green. A small but hardy band of bowlers use the all-weather surface during the winter. There is a special membership rate for winter bowling only. Little deters them, not even snow.
