Pairs, Prayers & Precipitation

Ladies Works League

Ladies Works League Pairs Competition

The portents were not good and no amount of praying influenced an improvement in the weather but heavy precipitation was not the only enduring memory of Sunday's Ladies Works League's Drawn Pairs KO Competition.

The Finalists (left to right): Elaine Bell, Jayne Cowgill, Norma Maxwell (Treasurer), Hazel Rangeley and Jane Buchan.

Well despite delays due to the Covid pandemic and the potential threat of disastrous weather the pairs competition was successfully played on Sunday at Brockholes BC. Twenty-eight hearty souls battled the elements which ranged from sudden torrential downpours to glorious warm sunshine. Each pairing played twice culminating in 4 pairs with the highest aggregate scores going through to the semi final/final.

Whilst 2 sections resulted in clear cut winners in Andrea Oldham and Julia Mc Donald and Elaine Bell and Jane Buchan the other 2 were more closely contested affairs. Hazel Rangeley and Jayne Cowgill scored 42 points to Marie Nicholson's and Vicky Stones fine score of 39 and Josie Wadsworth and Linda Chadwick just edged out Pat Hodgson and Jean Brook 42 to 40.

The semi finals scores were:

Julia McDonald (Pearce Displays) / Andrea Oldham (Brook Hanson B) 6

Jayne Cowgill (Strait Kutz Hairdressing) / Hazel Rangeley (Pearce Displays) 21

Elaine Bell (D. Haigh & Co) / Jane Buchan (Alicia Dawn Photography) 21

Josie Wadsworth (Cole Valley Garden Centre) / Linda Chadwick (Bolster Moor Farm Shop) 16

The final game see-sawed this way and that, but eventually, despite the good natured partisan crowd rooting for the home bowler Elaine Bell and partner Jayne Buchan, they succumbed to Jane Cowgill and Hazel Rangeley who won 21 - 16.

The eventful and very entertaining day culminated in the presentation of a new pairs trophy by our treasurer Norma Maxwell - The Millie House Trophy, named in honour of our former secretary of over 20 years who sadly died earlier this year. Millie would have simply loved the day, which saw bowling played in the best of spirits despite the adversities of the challenging conditions.

A special mention goes to Jayne Cowgill who told us that this was her first trophy win in over 20 years of bowling. This just goes to show that perseverance, an often underacted attribute, really does pay dividends, so many congratulations.

Well done to everyone else who entered, you all contributed hugely to the success of the competition. Thank you also to everyone at Brockholes for providing a green in splendid condition, keeping us fed and watered throughout the day and generally helping us to run the competition.
