Paddock I&C 50 Years in the Veterans League

Veterans League

ALL OUR YESTERDAYS - from 1970 to 2021

Paddock I&C were a founder member of the Veterans League when it was first formed in 1970 and through this record from Clancy Gough are some highlights from that 50 years.

One of the driving forces for Paddock joining the new Veterans League was Hector Hamilton who had been a stalwart of the club for many years. Hector became the first winner of the League's Examiner Rose Bowl in 1971. He was also the club's General Secretary and Treasurer for a number of years.

When Hector passed away his ashes were spread on the green. A notable Meltham bowler used to lick his fingers and he was not well pleased when he learned of the 'fertiliser' used on the green.

It was to be another 5 years before the Institute won the Andrew Barrie Cup for topping Section 2. Dress was quite important in the 70's resulting in one bowler being dropped from the team for not wearing a tie.

In 1985 a 6-Man League was formed in the Veterans League and Paddock won their only 6-Man Section A trophy in 1989. Dropping down a level shortly after before gaining promotion by winning the Section B title in 2009 and have been in the top section ever since.

In 2005 the club won the 'Most Improved Green' accolade with Joe Kain, father of Peter, the club's greenkeeper. The latest success of the club in the Veterans League came in 2019 when winning the Section 3 title when beating Bradley & Colne by 19 chalks after 22 league games.

2021 will be the club's 52nd consecutive season playing in the Veterans League.
