New Ladies Triples at Broad Oak

Bowling News

Report by Hazel Rangeley

Congratulations to Suzi Ladbrooke, Julie Mallinson and Linda Gledhill on their success in the Peter and Judith Muff Triples Competition at Broad Oak on Friday night (30 May).

This new competition sponsored by the generous legacy left by Peter and Judith Muff attracted a field of 21 teams.  8 teams made it through to the final night and all received cash prizes.

The first semi-final game of 11 ends was between Janet Coulman, Chelsea Gilbert- Haigh and Brenda Normington, up against the in form Rachel Byram, Bernie Toon and Karen Crowther. Janets team were in imperious form however and ran out easy winners with a score of 18 - 5 the highest score of the whole tournament.

In the other semi-final the team of Suzi Ladbrooke, Julie Mallinson and Linda Gledhill faced Glynis Philbin who had previously won the Presidents Trophy here, Janet Allen and Sue Scott. This game was a very close affair and was only decided on the last end. Glynis's team were counting two on a tricky downhill mark and had victory within touching distance. Suzi was left with the last bowl and she produced a weight-perfect bowl that managed to weave its way miraculously through to the jack and victory was theirs. The final score was 11-9.

The final was another close match with Chelsea's team leading at 6-3 after 6 ends. A change in the order of their opponents, with the lead swapping from Julie to Linda however proved a wise and decisive move. Suzi's team counted on the next 5 ends and the match was over at 10 -6 and they were the winners.

Our thanks go to Broad Oak BC for hosting the competition over 3 nights. The green, hospitality, measuring and general helpfulness was excellent.

Tracey Singleton and Carole Harpin presented the prizes on behalf of the Ladies League to the last 8 teams. All in all the competition provided an opportunity to enjoy friendly rivalry in a different format. We know that Peter and Judith would have approved of the format that attracted a diverse section of bowlers and we hope that you all enjoyed yourselves.
