New era of the Rose Bowl starts tomorrow

Veterans League

The Veterans League Rose Bowl KO competition starts off with the knock-out phase competition-friendly number of entries of 32 bowlers. They have been divided into two qualifying competitions of 16 in each to be based at Longwood and Lindley Lib. These qualifying rounds are to be played tomorrow starting at 1.30pm with the actual draw taking place at green-side on the day. The top four bowlers from each green going through to Finals Day to be played at Netherton Con on Thursday 19 September. Lowerhouses' bowler Graham Hirst begins the defence of his 2023 title success at Lindley Lib.

This is the start of a new era for the coveted Rose Bowl competition which first saw the light of day in 1971 the year after the League was first formed. Only a two-year Covid gap has hindered the progress of the competition since then and this year will be the 51st year that it has been played for. The actual trophy of a Rose Bowl was donated to the League by the Huddersfield Examiner and the competition has been named accordingly ever since. That has changed this year with a bequeathment in the will of former Examiner Bowling Reporter Peter Muff being recognised by a change of name to the Peter & Judith Muff Rose Bowl.
