Bowling News
We recently asked the question 'Is the Marsh United green too good?' This was in a weekly preview of fixtures in the Veterans League as an answer to the dipping form of that club's Division 1 team who had just lost for the 6th match on the bounce. This was after a great start to the season when they headed the table after clocking up 5 wins from their first 6 matches. Now looking set for a relegation fight the thinking turns to what may be the answer - could the root course be their own green. Since then of course they have had a great home win over the League leaders and in doing so completed a League double, a great achievement.
However the question remains unanswered - can a green be too good to the detriment of the home team? Can the perfect green can become a great leveller when the visiting bowler meets a perfectly fair green. One missing the mini-crowns and hidden dips and quirks that most greens have. This is to the disadvantage of the home bowler who maybe has to 'learn' the green again to compete with all-comers.
Seeing as we are talking about good greens I thought it might be interesting to learn of bowler's views on the best green that they have bowled on this season. Such views are always going to be subjective of course and may be influenced by the outcome of the match played. But fair-minded Yorkshire folk can usually tell if a green has been a major factor in the result of any game and they can put such things to one side and praise the merit, or not, of any green.
Being a greenkeeper is a lonely and thankless task with clubs grateful for such volunteers and I am sure that many would welcome a good review especially if it comes from outside their own club.
Tell us which has been the best green you have bowled on this season so far and what made it special. You can use the Comment function at the foot of this posting or use the Contact Us facility on the website or you can even email me at jefftheref2000@yahoo.co.uk and I will add it to the listing.

Added on behalf of David Peacock, Milnsbridge BC Best green we have bowled on is Elland WMC
Added on behalf of Jim Baxter The best greens I have bowled on this season are both the other side of the hill. One being my second home club Dobcross and the other a council owned green, Cedar park in Tameside. Both greens are looked after by the club members. They are a credit to the clubs and a pleasure to bowl on.

This is a serious comment. Best greens, Golcar Lib and Lower Hopton tied for top spot.
