MUGS Handicap 2024

League News

The Jack Burgin Trophy - or the MUGS Trophy as it is affectionately known - is open to bowlers who have never won an open competition. There is a £5 entry fee and £400 in prize money up for grabs with £200 of that going to the eventual winner, £100 to the runner-up and £50 to the two losing semi-finalists.

There are two scheduled qualifying preliminary dates which are consecutive Friday evenings in May (the 10th & 17th) with a 6.30pm start time. Then the eight qualifiers will go through to Finals Day which will be held on Sunday 26 May with a 2.00pm start time.

This is one competition where the previous year's winner doesn't get the opportunity to defend the title. Andy Harper was the 2023 winner of this title when he used his home advantage on the Lockwood Con green to come from behind to beat Jamie Hulley of Brighouse Sports. A subtle change to the qualification criteria of bowlers means that Brighouse Sports bowlers are prevented from entering the competition in future along with any other bowlers from clubs that don't have a team in the Huddersfield Saturday League.
