Veterans League
Review of the Veterans 10-Man League Divisions 1&2 results for Tuesday 17 September
Congratulations to Lowerhouses and Meltham A who this week both claimed their respective divisions' titles. For Lowerhouses it is a first ever Division 1 title and for Meltham an immediate return to the top level after a 12-months sabbatical in Division 2.
Lowerhouses have won the Veterans League Division 1 title for the first time ever after this week's fixtures. Lowerhouses were playing away at Kirkheaton Con A knowing that a win and the minimum five points that would bring would be sufficient to win them the title. They didn't reach that target but the two points they did collect in a 2-7 defeat were sufficient to send them clear at the top with a 19-points lead with two matches left to be played.
That outcome was also supported by Longwood and Marsh United A in not claiming 9-0 winning scores to keep the pressure on the leaders. Marsh United A were involved in a 9-0 scoreline but that went against them at Golcar Lib and with Longwood winning at Waterloo with a 6-3 scoreline means that Lowerhouses can no longer be caught by either of their rivals.
At the foot of the table, Lindley BC A closed the gap to safety to 7 points after a 6-3 home win over already relegated Netherton Con A and with Rastrick going down 2-7 at Cowcliffe leaves the destiny of the second relegation place still up in the air. A run of four straight wins for Clayton West has eased them away from fears of relegation and they only need one point from their remaining two fixtures to be sure of staying in the top flight for the 2025 season. The final day fixture between Rastrick and Lindley BC A may still be the last-gasp attempt for both teams to avoid the dreaded drop. We shall see.
Meltham A are the Division 2 Champions after winning 5-4 away at New Mill A and with a 19-points lead cannot be caught. However, the second promotion place has still to be decided and will be between Lindley Lib A and Elland C&BC with both teams picking up 6-3 home wins this week so keeping the gap to 6 points in the Lindley team's favour.
It is still mathematically possible for Alomndbury Lib to avoid relegation but is also highly unlikely with a 17-points gap to be erased and only two matches to be played. That still leaves the destiny of the second relegation place to be determined with one point separating the next 3 teams. Linthwaite Hall was the only winning team in the bottom four and that has given them a glimmer of hope of escaping from the drop zone. They won 6-3 away at Almondbury Lib to keep their hopes alive. Golcar Lib B and Broad Oak A both lost their matches this week to stay in the relegation mix with two matches still to be played.
