The Lowerhouses pair of Graham Hirst and Les Holmes won the 2025 Over-70's Pairs KO on Thursday on their home green. However that outcome seemed highly unlikely after five ends in the final as their opponents, the Clayton West pairing of Tim Poulter and Edwin Haigh, raced into an 8-1 lead and that one point was a result of the Lowerhouses' pairs handicap.
As soon as they got the jack for the first time there was an instant change of tactics. The long marks from the Clayton West pair had served them well but that all changed as the shorter mark across the end in front of the clubhouse was the homester's favoured approach. That turned the balance as Les and Graham raced into a 12-8 lead which was momentarily interrupted for five more points for the long mark before the Lowerhouses pair retrieved the jack to see them comfortably home for the 21-13 win.
The rain which had threatened to disrupt proceedings all afternoon suddenly took over in the presentation ceremony, sending the winners to cover for the last presentation of the afternoon, as covered in the photograph below.
