Winter League
A review of Wednesday's fixtures in Division 1 and 2
Lindley Lib 'A' were promoted from Division 2 last season and they have started their Division 1 life in the same sort of winning form. A 6-2 win this week over Clayton West pushed them to the top of the latest table and signalled their intent to fully justify their new status
After a shock opening day defeat for the reigning Champions from Lower Hopton they bounced back with a vengeance with Meltham being on the wrong end of that revival and a 0-8 scoreline. That result put the Division 1 Champions firmly back in the title hunt and one of three teams level on 10 points at the top of the table.
The New Millers match against Lindley BC 'A' was called off a week ago because of team-raising problems but they will have noted the results and how the Division 1 title race promises to be more open this season. Thorpe Green 'A' are likely to be among the prime contenders after showing their potential when drawing 4-4 with Kirkheaton Con which was a 2nd draw for the Thorpe Green side.
It is interesting to note that the best 'Aggregate For' total is held by fourth-placed Thorpe Green 'A' who have a top score total of 114 points even though they haven't won (or lost) a match yet. Couple that with the record of the Thorpe Green pairs team who have lost both their opening games 20-21 to indicate that they are not far off improving their status and edging a match sometime very soon.
Division 1 Footnote: It has been a good start to the season for Lindley Liberal Club with both their teams topping their respective tables at this early point in the season. The 'A' team top the Division 1 table and a run of three straight wins for their 'B' side see them clear at the top of Division 4.
Milnsbridge and Lockwood Con continue to set the pace in Division 2 and both clocked up a second consecutive win this week but failed to shake off a persistent Lindley BC 'B' team who beat Springwood 'A' 6-2 on their own green to be very much in the picture. It is still early days and I would anticipate both of the top two teams involving more bowlers in the next few weeks. Both Lockwood Con and Milnsbridge 'A' have played the same four bowlers in both of their opening matches but have many more signed on. Lockwood Con have actually registered 14 bowlers for their first season in the league and they are expected to introduce winter bowling to most of that number.
Milnsbridge are expected to rotate their 8-man squad over the coming weeks and if both teams do that then we will be able to judge the strength in depth of both setups and see how they are likely to figure in the promotion chase.
The meeting of two relegated teams from Division 1 saw both looking for their first wins of the season with Lowerhouses 'A' overcoming Rastrick 'A' by 6-2 to open their 2022-23 account.
