Julie Fuller Trophy Final - a day to enjoy

Veterans League

One of the best days in the Veterans League calendar is the double Finals Day involving the Over-80's and the Julie Fuller Trophy. More about the Over-80's still to come but first let's look at the 6-Man League's only team competition with the Julie Fuller Trophy to be awarded to the eventual winner.

Julie Fuller has sponsored the competition for over 20 years but withdrew in 2023 when Frank Greenwood took over that role but retained the competition's long-standing identity. All 6-Man League teams are automatically entered into the competition which has a three-pairs format with the aggregate totals determining the eventual winner. Only in the event of a drawn aggregate result does the number of winners come into play.

The 2024 Final is between Waterloo and New Mill who have a 10-point handicap start over their rivals. Neither team have won this title before. All 3-pairs go on to the green together in the final which is sandwiched between the Semi-Finals and Final of the Over-80's KO.

Traditionally the competition has alternated between two different greens - Hemplow and Kirkheaton C&BC - as per the preferences of the two competition sponsors. Last year with the change in sponsorship the finals were staged at Golcar Lib. This year they are to be played at Skelmanthorpe Windmill.

Waterloo are playing in the 6-Man League for the first time and are having a good opening season in the top division where they have resided for most of the campaign in the top three. Their Thursday opponents are Division 2 side New Mill who have eliminated three Division 1 teams so far - Golcar C&BC, Slaithwaite and Lindley Lib A.

With the weather set to be warm and two Finals to enjoy a good crowd is expected to support teams and individuals that don't often get to be involved in such occasions. It is a good day out.
