Winter League
A review of the matches played in Divisions 1 & 2 on Wednesday 20 December
The Christmas Number One in the Division 1 table is Thorpe Green A just as they were 12 months ago when they had a one-point lead over Lower Hopton but that lead was reversed by the end of the season when they lost the title by one-point to Lower Hopton.
Will history repeat itself this year as Thorpe Green hold a two-point lead over New Mill A on Christmas Day? A 6-2 win over Lowerhouses enabled the Thorpe Green team to overtake New Mill A who had a bye week and regain top spot whilst Lower Hopton remain third with half the season's fixtures still to be played.
Lower Hopton beat Kirkheaton Con A who are worryingly placed third from bottom just one-point above the Lowerhouse's A side and both ahead of Golcar Lib who surprisingly remain bottom of the table due to a 2-6 loss to the improving Lindley BC A team. Meltham lifted themselves out of the relegation places with a second win of the season with a surprise 8-0 win over Clayton West who drop from 3rd to 5th as a result.
Division 2 leaders, Cowcliffe A, remain the only team in any division with a 100% win record and they extended that sequence to eight matches with a 6-2 victory over Denby Dale and ending their opponents 4-match winning run in the process. They didn't widen the gap to the chasing pack as Lindley BC B won the Lindley derby by the same 6-2 scoreline to stay 14-points behind the leaders.
The meeting of the two bottom sides saw the Recreation Club widen their lead to 6-points over Lockwood Con A by beating them 6-2. At the same time they drew level on points with Springwood A and into a group of four only separated by 4-points all now seriously in a relegation dog-fight. The Springwood team collected 4-points from their draw encounter with Milnsbridge A who relinquished the second promotion place as a result and the three teams on level points at the start of the day no have a 4-points gap between them.
