Inter-District team play Skipton on Friday

Veterans League

The Huddersfield Veterans Inter-District team continue their season with Friday's fixture against Skipton. Last year the Skipton team finished four points and one place behind our team in the final table. When the two teams clashed, the Huddersfield side came out on top 39-17 so the expectation is that a similar result will be the outcome again this year.

However the feeling is that the Skipton team have already peaked as they have lost both of their opening two matches against Bradford and Aire & Wharfedale which are teams that they beat comprehensively last year. In both of this year's matches they lost both the home and away legs which is way down on the previous season's overall level. Even at their peak, the Skipton teams were only a mid-table outfit so if the Huddersfield team has any aspirations of returning to higher levels, then only a comprehensive win this week will fit with that target.

Even an expected win over Skipton will not indicate a real upsurge in form as that will only come when the team plays one of the top two teams, Leeds or West Riding. Leeds are the reigning Inter-District Champions but when the two teams met in the latest round of fixtures it was the West Riding team that came out on top with a significant 33-23 win.

The Friday teams have been announced and the home team are again playing at Lockwood Con with a 1.00pm start time. The team is: Captain Graham Sigsworth, Mick Chapman, Andy Carter, Ray Whitwam, Stephen Haigh, Andrew Wike, Adrian Cooper and Martin Skuse who will be making his debut.

The away team are playing at Rolls Royce, Barnoldswick, Skipton BB18 5RU with Malcolm Gilbert captaining the team and he has selected Garry Senior and Derek Hewitt returning alongside Dave Pollard, Tim Poulter, Andy Lumb, Steve Mallinson and Stuart Greaves.
