Veterans League
The latest round of fixtures in the Yorkshire Veterans Inter-District League confirmed that the Huddersfield team are well out of contention for any honours this year. A resounding 18-38 defeat by Bradford put our opponents just one point behind our team in the table with a match in hand. This came on top of the 16-40 defeat last month against the West Riding team who look to be favourites to win the 2024 competition. They are 16 points ahead of the Leeds team who they play later this month in what surely is the title decider even though both teams will still have another match to play.
After finishing last year as the competition runners-up it increasingly looks like the team is heading for a bottom half of the table conclusion this time around. The two Huddersfield teams are basically the same as last year so what has gone wrong?
The decision to play a third match on the Almondbury BC green after the humbling experience of a second big home defeat, having previously lost 8-20 against West Riding, will no doubt be questioned but maybe problems go deeper than that. The Inter-District team always used to be made up of bowlers who played in the Veterans League. There is no rule that says they must be but past practice restricted selection to League bowlers. That is no longer the case. I wonder what possible impact the selection of two bowlers who no longer play in the League can have on the team? Something has clearly changed to see such a drastic reverse of results this year.
