The Huddersfield Merit will be played at Waterloo on Saturday with no Huddersfield League matches being played on the day. This will be the 4th time that the Merit has been played at the Waterloo green with the previous occasions marked out below. The days when a field of 554 bowlers entered the competition have long gone but as Dave Parkin notes there is a very good reason for a bumper entry this year.
DAVE PARKIN
An excellent day will be had by all hopefully at Waterloo which will host the Huddersfield Merit for the 4th time on Saturday.
Like the last time it was held at Waterloo in 1960, some of the area’s biggest names (Jack Dyson, Ashley Daykin & Craig Gant) will not be playing as they are engaged in an Invitational in Morecambe. The absence of both 4-time winners Dyson & Daykin plus their Thongsbridge & County teammate, Gant should encourage many to enter. Could we have the youngest winner ever with someone under 21 winning it?

The Examiner report on the 1960 event is captured below.
