Veterans League
A disappointing day for the Huddersfield Veterans Inter-District team in their latest match when they just beat a Castleford team that had lost all 6 previous matches this season. The one redeeming feature of the day was that the leaders, Leeds, lost to Aire & Wharfe by 29-27 in a surprise outcome which means that the Huddersfield team has closed the gap to the leaders by two points but are still 27 points behind them.
That was a very good win for the Aire & Wharfe side in their first season in the League and they go second in the table as a result, passing a Halifax team on a bye week. Not a good day for the two Huddersfield teams failing to cash in on a Castleford team that has lost their previous six fixtures 16-40, 9-47, 16-40, 25-31, 27-29 and 20-36. With Leeds faltering and losing to Aire & Wharfe presented a real opportunity for the Huddersfield team to close in on them, but they have failed to do that, but do move into third spot with two matches left to play.
The last two matches for the Huddersfield team are against a weak Bradford team and an improving West Riding side who only Leeds have managed to beat this year. The Leeds side's two remaining fixtures are against Skipton, who haven't lost since the opening match of the season against Halifax, and they also have to play bottom of the table (for now) Wakefield.
