Review of the Division 7 matches played at Huddersfield RUBC on Thursday 16 October

I was really pleased to see my tip for the Division 7 title get off to a good start when the opening round of fixtures was played at the Rugby Club on Thursday. A 6-2 victory over New Mill C for my top tip of Marsh Lib A sees them making a good start to the season. I didn't expect anything less against opponents who only won one league match all last season. Still you can only beat what is put in front of you and they have done that with something to spare.

Huddersfield RUFC were pitched against Kirkheaton Con B and the two teams know each other very well. This is the third consecutive season that they have played each other with the game count being 1-1 in each of the previous two seasons. In addition the two teams met last year in two charity day events for a new trophy that had been donated. It was the Rugby Club that came out on top this week winning by 6-2, so presumably the Cons will win the return fixture in early December. That win puts the Rugby Club in third place but with a squad of 20 registered bowlers, more than any other team in the League, they need regular team changes to keep all the players involved and maybe it wont always be a strong line-up as it had clearly been this week.

Top of the Week 1 table is Holmfirth following their 8-0 whitewash win over Broad Oak B. Holmfirth were promoted as runners-up in Division 8 last season and are obviously out to set a hot pace at this new level. I get very little satisfaction (well maybe just a little) in seeing my two tips for relegation, Broad Oak A and Lockwood Con B sitting in the bottom three places at the end of the first week of the season. A 2-6 defeat for Lockwood Con B at the hands of the Recreation Club leaves them in familiar surroundings but there is a long way to go with many ups and downs along the way no doubt.
