Gordon finally lifts the Over-80's title

Veterans League

Gordon Walker won the 2024 Over-80's Champion title yesterday at Skelmanthorpe Windmill. After beating last year's losing finalist Trevor Sykes 21-15, he went on to take the title by beating Mick McClusky 21-8 in the Final. This was Gordon's 4th appearance in the final of this competition but the first time that he was won it. Having been previously beaten in the Final by Frank Greenwood (twice) and Eddie Hines he finally hit the mark with a strong all-round display.

I have always found this day of two finals played on the same green at the same time to be a wonderful reflection on all that is good about Veterans League bowling. As well as the final two rounds of the Over-80's the stage was also set for the Julie Fuller Trophy Final which is the one team competition for the teams in the 6-Man League. More of this later but the event was enhanced by a new venue for a League final at Skelmanthorpe Windmill.

The club had put a lot of effort into ensuring that everything ran smoothly and that bowlers, supporters and visitors enjoyed the experience. The weather certainly helped and so did the catering team and I was delighted to take advantage of the 'Meal Deal' for £4. I needed no encouragement to 'eat as much as you can' from a grand display of products and produce.

The green looked immaculate and the surrounds and garden were a joy to behold. The day deservedly attracted a lot of spectators and all that added to a really good day out and it all had to happen on Yorkshire Day as well.
