What a weekend for Halifax bowler Gareth Coates! After winning the Lindley BC £3200 Open on Friday evening he travelled down to Dodworth for the BCGBA Senior Merit often referred to as the All England. With eight Yorkshire representatives in the qualifying 32, hopes were high of a home victory. But the opening round claimed 5 Yorkshire victims with only Stuart King, Josh Brown and Gareth Coates surviving.
Josh had a great 21-2 opening win but then went down 20-21 to South Yorkshire's Mark Booth. Stuart King lasted a round longer before losing 20-21 to Derbyshire's Connor Chamberlain who Gareth Coates then beat in the semi-finals. That was only after coming back from 5-12 down with some exceptional bowling. Gareth was always competing and, when the opportunity came to head for the corners, he grabbed it with both hands romping home 21-16.
The Final pitched Gareth against another Derbyshire bowler, Daniel Pitcher, and the left-handed Halifax lad led most of the way to run out a 21-13 winner and a great weekend double for him.
A matchday programme was included in the £10 entry fee and here is your link to the free 70-page online copy. Move your mouse or finger into the black side pieces to scroll through all 70 pages.
