Edgerton bowling green 1893

Memories

Bill Blackburn sent me this story about a bowling green in Edgerton .

I've just been reading about the history of Edgerton. Apparently in the 1800's when the Colne Valley textile industry was thriving, the mill owners decided they no longer wanted to live among the smoke and grime of the area and bit by bit they had large houses built in the unspoilt area of Edgerton. Just off Kaffir Road a plot of land was laid out as a bowling green. An old metal gate in a wall on Halifax Road still remains as what was the entrance to the green.

The Ordnance Survey map of 1893 below shows the green with Halifax Road splitting the map from top left to bottom right. Further down is another map of more recent times with the location of the green super-imposed on its original location.
