Veterans League
Review of the Veterans 6-Man League fixtures played on Monday 16 September
Division 1 leaders Marsh United A won 5-2 away at Paddock I&C last Monday to maintain their 3-point lead over Waterloo but that result sent Paddock I&C through the relegation trapdoor. They are joined by Lockwood Con who lost 1-6 at home to Shepley A who remain in the three-way fight for the Division 1 title with 5 points separating the top three teams and two weeks to go in the 2024 season.
Clayton West lost a Division 2 fixture for only the third time this season but it was enough to leave the door open for Bradley & Colne, Marsh Lib A and New Mill to renew their challenges for the title. Bradley & Colne won 6-1 away at relegation-threatened Hemplow to reduce the gap to 6 points whilst New Mill extended their winning run to 11 matches by beating the leaders. Fifth-placed Holmfirth A will consider themselves as also being in that promotion mix after a 5-2 away win at Almondbury Lib puts them just 2-points behind the 2nd promotion place.
It is still very tight at the foot of the table whilst Elland C&BC are already relegated but it looks like one from three who will be joining them in Division 3 next season. Only two points separate Greenhead Park A, Hemplow and Linthwaite Hall. A 7-0 home win for Linthwaite Hall over Elland C&BC enhanced their escape chances but their two remaining fixtures are against teams involved in that promotion battle. Greenhead Park A have the easiest run-in to the end of season but they will need it to peg back the two-point deficit they have to make up.
Brockholes B are the Division 3 Champions after winning in style 7-0 away at Greenhead Park B to open up a 16-point lead which cannot be overtaken so congratulations to the Badgers.
The fight for the second promotion place is becoming less of a battle and more of a surrender as Denby Dale lost for the third successive fixture and with Thongsbridge B winning for the 8th consecutive week it sees the momentum is very much with the Thongsbridge team although they do have to face Denby Dale in the last match of the season but the matter may already have been resolved by then. Shepley B won for the 4th time this season when overcoming Thongsbridge C 5-2 but it looks too late a revival to relieve them of the wooden spoon this year.
